How to improve the sound of an old lecture or archive video

Archive recordings can be valuable but difficult to follow because of old equipment, tape hiss, hum and a faint voice.

Why archive recordings are difficult

An old lecture can combine hiss, low hum, a faint voice and large volume changes. It may also contain distortion or little speech detail. The aim is to make the available recording easier to follow, rather than promise studio sound.

Choose three reference passages

Find normal speech, a quiet phrase and a pause with background noise. In a long lecture, also check a passage after an edit or a change of speaker. Settings that work at the beginning may be too strong later.

A practical processing order

  1. Open the lecture in Chrome and enable cleaning. Start with noise reduction and speech leveling at zero, hum filtering off and the equalizer neutral.
  2. If hiss is distracting, gradually add noise reduction. Check quiet speech so word endings remain audible.
  3. For a steady low buzz, separately test “Remove 50 Hz hum”. Disable it if the background does not improve or the voice becomes too thin.
  4. Add “Even out speech” if you still need to adjust volume between phrases.
  5. Only then try the equalizer. Change one band in small steps and compare it with the neutral setting.

If quiet speech disappears

Lower noise reduction and try the other engine on the same passage. Some remaining background is often preferable to missing syllables. Do not judge the result only by silence between sentences.

If leveling makes hiss more noticeable

Speech leveling changes the dynamics of the processed signal, so remaining hiss may become more audible too. Reduce the strength and check the quiet phrase again. Avoid compensating with maximum noise reduction without checking speech.

What cannot be recovered reliably

If the source has clipped peaks, missing speech or severe muffling, noise does not guarantee recovery of lost information. Strong echo, speed fluctuations in old recordings and simultaneous speakers may also limit the result.

Listening or file restoration?

noise processes tab audio on your device and does not save a new video copy. Use a separate editor for restoration and export. During playback, you can change settings as the lecture progresses and switch back to Original when processing stops helping.

Hear the words, not the noise

noise processes audio while you watch. Add the extension and adjust the cleaning to suit your recording.
